Pro Bono Program
MILS has received a Pro Bono Initiative Fund two-year grant from LSC. This program will start October 1, 2019. MILS completed needs assessments in 2005 and 2014 and, in both, access to services in the communities was raised as an issue. The Project Goal is to increase the availability and accessibility of legal assistance to low income Native community members in their communities by funneling resources from the urban areas to more remote portions of the state. The core of MILS’s mission is to provide quality legal assistance to Indian communities and the challenge is providing assistance to small populations residing in every part of the state. MILS seeks to address the gap principally by recruiting late-career and retired attorneys: 1) to provide community legal education in the rural Native communities; 2) to mentor newer MILS attorneys so that MILS staff can provide high-quality legal assistance in remote communities; and 3) to represent clients directly.
